Track AI costs per app, against what each app earns
AI providers bill by organisation, not by app. Once two or three apps share the same OpenAI or Anthropic account, it's hard to tell which one is running up the bill, or whether it earns enough to pay for it.
This guide covers what to measure, how SoulStack reads each provider, and how to get the cleanest split.
What to measure
- AI spend per app per day, split by model where the provider gives it
- AI cost as a share of the app's revenue, which tells you more than the dollar figure
- A jump in spend, caught the day it happens rather than on the monthly bill
- Profit after AI, payment fees and store commission
What SoulStack reads
Each provider only shares costs with an admin-level key. SoulStack uses it to read costs and nothing else, and encrypts it before storing it. What it reads from each:
- OpenAI: your organisation's daily costs, with an Admin key
- Anthropic (beta): daily Claude API costs by model, plus web search and code execution, with an Admin key. It needs an organisation in the Claude Console
- OpenRouter (beta): daily spend by model for the last 30 full days, with a management key
Getting a clean split per app
Providers report costs for a whole organisation. If one organisation serves several apps, connect it to each of them and SoulStack splits its cost evenly between them.
An even split is an estimate. For the cleanest figures, give each app its own organisation, so each app's cost is exactly its own.
Score, alerts and profit
AI cost as a share of revenue is 10% of each app's health score. A cost spike alert fires when AI spend passes your limit as a share of revenue, 30% by default.
The profit view takes AI off revenue along with payment fees, store commission and any costs you enter yourself. Hosting costs from Vercel and Cloudflare are coming soon.
On Pro and Studio, Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can read the same figures over MCP, with get_ai_spend and get_margins.
Questions
- Why does SoulStack need an Admin key?
- OpenAI and Anthropic only share costs through their admin APIs, and OpenRouter only through a management key. A regular API key is refused. SoulStack only reads costs with it.
- Can I combine several AI providers for one app?
- Yes. Connect OpenAI, Anthropic and OpenRouter to the same app and their spend is added together, so the cost ratio covers every model you pay for.
- Are OpenRouter bring-your-own-key costs counted?
- No. When you use your own provider key through OpenRouter, that provider bills you, so connect it directly instead.
- Is there a free plan?
- Yes. The free plan covers 1 app with AI costs, the health score and alerts. Pro is $19 a month for 10 apps, with a 7-day free trial.
